The National 71 is an electric powered carpet puller. It locks into existing direct glued-down carpet with a pull bar and gripper strips, then winds it off the floor with a low-stretch rope, and National says it works over any type of floor surface. It is built for one-person operation and runs on a 1 HP motor.

Maintenance schedule

From National's 71 operating manual (402294 Rev C). The manual gives a pre-operation check, oil intervals for the gear reducer and a set of as-needed items.

Interval What to do
Before each use Protective screens and rope guard in place; check pull bar welds and clamps; check pulley wheel, housing, hook and pin for loose or damaged parts; check rope for cuts or fraying; keep gripper strip pins clean (stiff wire brush, in the direction of the pin angle); check wiring and that switches return to off
120 hours (new reducer) First gear reducer oil change (based on 8 hours per day operation)
Every 2,000 hours or every six months Change gear reducer oil
Once per year Check gearbox oil level at the level screw on the side; top up with Mobil SHC 634 if needed
As needed Inspect power cords, rope, switches and guards; replace the pull rope when it shows reduced diameter, frays or cuts (#71-P33); grease the drive shaft and pillow block bearing so the shaft engages and disengages freely; clean the pull bar clamping bar and check C-clamps; replace damaged gripper strips; cover gripper strips when transporting

Fluids and lubricants

Lubricants National specifies in the 71 manual.

  • Gearbox / gear reducer: Mobil SHC 634 or a similar synthetic gear oil, ISO viscosity grade 460 (National stock #1450-40, 1 quart)
