VCT Layout and Installation

Squaring the room, setting border widths, spreading VCT adhesive to dry-to-touch, and rolling, with the numbers from AHF, Mannington and Tarkett.

Updated · 3 min read

VCT is forgiving to cut and set, but the layout isn't. A square start, even borders and adhesive that has reached the right tack decide how the floor looks. The details below compare three major VCT makers.[1][2][3] Follow the sheet for your own tile and adhesive.

Before you start

Conditions and the substrate come first.

  • Condition tile and adhesive at room temperature for 48 hours. AHF and Mannington call for 65 to 100°F; Tarkett uses 65 to 85°F and 40 to 60% RH.[1][2][3]
  • Avoid portable heaters, and never use kerosene heaters.[1]
  • Remove old adhesive to the level the maker requires. AHF wants the residue gone so the full original substrate is exposed, and warns that remover solvents can bleed through.[1]
  • Presume old flooring and adhesive contain asbestos until tested. See Cutback adhesive and asbestos ID.
  • Test moisture and check flatness. See Subfloor moisture testing and Subfloor flatness.

Lay out the room

The standard method divides the room into equal quadrants.[2]

  1. Mark the midpoints of the end walls and snap a chalk line between them.
  2. Strike two arcs from the center of that line and snap a second line through them. It crosses the first at a right angle.
  3. Dry-lay a row of tile along both lines to check the border widths.
  4. Shift the lines so borders are even. Aim for borders at least half a tile wide where possible.[2] Avoid borders under 6", and keep tile joints at least 6" from underlayment joints.[1]

Spread and set

VCT adhesive is spread thin and allowed to dry to a tack before tile goes down.

Adhesive Trowel Ready when
AHF S-515[1] U-notch 1/32" deep, 1/16" wide, 5/64" apart Dry to the touch; open time over 30 minutes
Mannington M-Guard V-11[2] 1/16" wide, 1/32" deep, 1/32" apart Tack and dry, normally 45 to 50 minutes
Tarkett 100[3] 1/32 x 1/16 x 1/32 U Per the adhesive label

Use the thumb test: press lightly on the adhesive. If it feels slightly tacky as you pull your thumb away but nothing sticks to your thumb, it's ready. Open time changes with job conditions, temperature, humidity, air flow and the substrate.[1]

  1. Spread one quarter of the room at a time without covering the chalk lines.
  2. Set tile along the lines, then stair-step into the field. Set each tile firmly against its neighbors instead of sliding it into place.[2] Sliding pushes adhesive up into the seams.[3]
  3. Check the direction arrows. Tarkett's standard VCT can be laid in one direction or quarter-turned for a checkerboard; its premium and granite lines must all point the same way.[3]
  4. Lay the field first, then fit the borders.

Borders and fitting

Borders are scribed off the last full tile.

  • Place a full tile over the last full field tile, butt another full tile against the wall on top of it, and score along its edge.[2]
  • For intricate cuts, heat the tile from the back, never from the face.[1]

Roll and protect

Rolling seats the tile in the adhesive.

  • Roll with a 100 lb roller.[1] Tarkett calls for both directions with a 100 lb three-section roller, and hand-rolling where it can't reach.[3]
  • Traffic: Tarkett restricts all traffic for 24 hours, and heavy traffic and rolling loads for 72. AHF S-515 is the same.[1][3]
  • First wash: AHF says wait at least 5 days, Mannington 4 to 5 days, Tarkett 72 hours.[1][2][3] Follow the tile maker.

Common mistakes

These show up as crooked rows or oozing joints.

  • Starting off a wall. Walls aren't square. Start from center lines.
  • Setting tile into wet adhesive. It shifts and oozes. Wait for dry-to-touch.
  • Sliding tiles. It pushes adhesive into the joints.
  • Heating from the face. It can damage the surface.
  • Skipping the roller.
