Which Eddy Floor Scraper parts wear, how to change blades, and how to read Eddy's parts list when ordering
This guide is general information, not a substitute for the regulations or a qualified professional. Follow OSHA's silica standard for construction (29 CFR 1926.1153) and OSHA's asbestos rules for construction, and use an EPA-accredited asbestos professional for testing and abatement. State and local rules may be stricter.
The Eddy Multi-Purpose Floor Scraper is a light vibrating scraper: 110V, 5A, with a direct-drive permanent-magnet DC motor.[1] It doesn't have much to go wrong. The parts that do wear are blades, the rubber mounts that isolate the vibration, the motor brushes, and the handle, trigger and cord. This guide is organized around the factory parts list,[3] which numbers every component (0001, 0002…) and matches the part numbers we stock.
VCT and black mastic are among the materials this machine is sold to remove.[1] OSHA requires asphalt and vinyl flooring installed in 1980 or earlier to be treated as asbestos-containing unless the employer shows it isn't. Removing it requires wet methods and no sanding (OSHA 1926.1101; EPA: Asbestos).[4] See Cutback adhesive and asbestos ID before you start. Unplug the machine before changing blades or working on it, plug into GFCI-protected power on construction sites (OSHA 1926.404),[5] and don't use a damaged cord (OSHA 1926.416).[4][5]
The machine ships with a 9" blade, a smaller multi-purpose blade, a 4" double-sided parquetry blade, and a left and a right side blade.[1][3]
| Blade | Part no. | Mounts on |
|---|---|---|
| 9" multi-purpose | 0013 | Upper support 0011 / lower support 0009 |
| 5.5" multi-purpose | 0014 | Upper support 0012 |
| 4" parquetry | 0031 | Parquetry blade holder 0033 |
| Left / right side blades | 0015L / 0015R | Fit at the blade ends to slit carpet or vinyl into strips |
To change a blade, follow these steps.[2]
While the blade is off, check the blade supports for damage. They are what clamp the blade.
The vibrating plate (0002) is isolated from the upper enclosure (0003) by rubber parts: four rubber shocks (0026), four rubber bushings (0025), and four bushings for the no. 3 support (0027). They're also sold as a bushing kit (0077) that covers parts 24, 25, 26, 27 and 50.[3] Torn or compressed rubber passes vibration up into the handle and loosens hardware. Inspect these whenever the machine feels harsher than normal.
The motor (EDLS-0043) uses two motor brushes (0005) under two brush caps (0004), with cap protectors (0071) and left and right brush holders (0078).[3] Brushes are a normal wear item on this kind of motor. If the brush holders need replacing, note that Eddy's parts list shows Red = left and Black = right, while our product titles show 0078D Right (Red) and 0078G Left (Black).
These parts get banged around on every job.
Eddy doesn't publish a troubleshooting table for this machine. Start with the cheap, visible items: cord and plugs, the outlet or GFCI, then the trigger and toggle switch. If none of those is the problem, the brushes are next.
