What a carpet beveler does, when rug edges need beveling before binding, which tools suit cut pile vs loop, and using napping shears for touch-up.
A beveler tapers the pile at the edge of a rug so the binding can wrap it cleanly. Carving uses the same kind of tool to cut patterns and outlines into the pile. The right beveler depends on the pile, and a test cut on scrap saves the rug.
Binding often can't cover the full height of the pile, so tapering it gives a smooth transition from the pile to the binding. Thick carpet always needs a bevel before binding; lower-grade commercial carpet doesn't.[1]
Same kind of tool, different job: one finishes an edge, the other decorates the face.
Not every beveler handles every carpet.
Here's the general sequence; follow your beveler's instructions for settings.
Duckbill napping shears trim individual tufts without gouging.
Binding is a band or strip sewn over the carpet edge; serging is heavy yarn sewn around the edge in a close overcast stitch.[3] For installed broadloom with an exposed edge and no transition, run at least a 1/8" bead of seam sealer along the edge.[6]
These show up in the finished binding.
These are the beveler and napping shears we stock.
