A reducer takes the edge of a floor down to the next surface without a trip hazard. Pick it by two things: the height you're covering, and what's on each side.
On accessible routes, ADA section 303 sets the limits.[1]
| Height change | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Up to 1/4" | May be vertical |
| 1/4" to 1/2" | Must be beveled, no steeper than 1:2 |
| Over 1/2" | Must be a ramp |
A reducer covers the first two rows. Over 1/2", build up the low side or use a ramp. See Transitions and thresholds.
Manufacturers group profiles by what they connect. Johnsonite's reducer line is a good example.[2]
The residential carpet standard requires a transition molding where carpet meets another floor. With no molding, the hard floor can be at most 1/16" higher than the carpet, and you run a 1/8" bead of seam sealer along the carpet edge (section 5.4).[3]
Work through these in order.
Rubber and vinyl reducers go down with adhesive.
Most reducer problems come from sizing.
