Binding Machine Setup: Needles, Tape and Thread

Setting up a carpet binder: needle and orientation, thread tension, folder and tape width, stitch type, and single vs double pull.

Updated · 2 min read

Most binding problems come from setup, not the machine. A clean edge mostly comes from three things: the right needle installed the right way, balanced tension, and a folder that matches the tape. The details below follow binder makers' manuals and guides.[1][2][3]

Needle

The needle is the most common cause of skipped stitches.

  • Use a Schmetz #23 or #22. The #23 is stiffer and better for berber.[1]
  • Install it with the long groove facing left and the scarf (notch) facing right.[1]
  • Replace needles that are bent or burred. Keep spares on hand.

Thread and tension

Get the tension balanced before you sew a real edge.

  • With correct tension, the threads knot in the middle of the carpet.[1]
  • Adjust the top tension in small steps, 1/4 turn or less.[1]
  • Check the bobbin: hanging from its thread, the bobbin case should let out about 1" of thread.[1]
  • Typical supplies are 22 or 23 DP needles with size 69 (#207) bonded nylon or monofilament thread.[3]

Folders and tape

The folder shapes the tape around the edge, so it has to match the tape width.

  • The BindPro uses 7/8", 1-1/4" and a 1-1/4" wide-mouth folder.[1]
  • Bevel carpet heavier than 40 oz before binding.[1]
  • Use one tape guide only, or the carpet curls.[1]
  • Long-shank needles go with 1-1/4" folders.[3]

Stitch and technique

A zigzag stitch is the usual choice because it's more forgiving, while a straight stitch is better for heavy berber and wall base. Never pull on the carpet or the machine while sewing; let the puller feed it.[1]

Single vs double pull

A single puller covers about 90% of binding work. Double pull is for plush or heavy berber rugs, 40 to 50 oz and up, paired with 1-1/4" tape.[2] See Carpet binding vs serging for choosing a finish.

Setup checklist

Run through this before the first edge.

  1. Install a fresh needle, groove left, scarf right.
  2. Thread top and bobbin; check the bobbin drop test.
  3. Fit the folder that matches your tape.
  4. Bevel heavy carpet.
  5. Sew a test piece and check the knot position. Adjust top tension in small steps.

Common mistakes

These cause most bad edges on new setups.

  • Needle in backward. It skips stitches right away.
  • Two tape guides. The edge curls.
  • Pulling the carpet. It bends the needle and skews the stitch.
  • Big tension adjustments. Go a quarter turn at a time.

If it still skips, see Binding machine skipped stitches and timing.
