Seguir comprandoOn a battery ride-on, the drive wheels, wheel motors and front caster take more abuse than anything except the blade. Carpet fiber and glue wrap the wheel motor shafts, the caster stops swiveling, and the machine starts fighting you. This guide follows the National 5700 and 5000 manuals, which use the same rear wheel and caster parts.[1][2] Always check the manual for your model and serial range.[3]
Always disconnect the battery before any maintenance.[1] Raise the machine only as the manual describes and set it on solid blocks under the forklift cups before you remove a wheel. Keep hands and feet out from under the cutting head and slide plate. Follow your company's lockout/tagout procedure (OSHA: Control of Hazardous Energy; OSHA 1926.417, lockout and tagging of circuits).[4][5]
Each rear wheel is driven by its own hydraulic wheel motor. The front of the machine rides on a single swivel caster. These part numbers come from the 5700 and 5000 parts lists.[1][2]
| Part | National part no. | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel motor, hydraulic, 10mm | 400133 | Held on by four 1/2-13 Nylock nuts (73402) |
| Woodruff key, 5/16 x 1 | 73047 | Locates the hub on the motor shaft |
| Wheel hub / hub nut / cotter pin | 5110-117 / 5110-117-2 / 401433 | Hub nut is secured with the cotter pin |
| Wheel, rim and tire, 18" | 5110-405 | Five 1/2-20 Nylock lug nuts (73430) |
| Caster assembly, kingpinless, 4", plate-mount | 402280 | Bolts on with four bolts |
| Caster wheel, 4" OD x 2-1/2" W (wheel only) | 403352 | Axle is 403353 |
| Transport wheels / 5" transport caster | 5110-100 / 5110-100W | Front wheel assembly for moving the machine |
Other models use different wheels. The 5600, 5625 and 7700 take the 5600-300 wheel, and the 8000 takes the 401697 wheel. Older casters (which are no longer available) that run two wheels on a center spoke take two 5200-194A wheels (4" x 2-1/4"). The current plate-mount caster takes the 403352 - all models use this caster.
The daily checklist includes inspecting the wheels, caster and wheel motors for build-up and cleaning them.[1] Debris wrapped around the wheel motor shaft is the most common cause of a wheel problem.
Grease the caster fitting once a month so it keeps moving freely.[1] Keep the caster clean so it swivels freely. A caster that still binds after cleaning and greasing should be replaced.
Start with these checks before you order parts.
| Symptom | Check first |
|---|---|
| Slight clicking from the tires or wheel motors | Normal noise during proper operation[1] |
| Wheel drags or the machine pulls to one side under power | Fiber or glue wrapped on that wheel motor shaft; clean it |
| Sluggish, or turns hard right or left, when moving a weighted machine | The machine is riding on the caster alone. Move it on the cutting head or the front transport wheels[1] |
| Caster doesn't swivel freely | Clean and grease; replace the caster if it still binds |
| Oil at the wheel motor or its hoses | See Ride-on scraper hydraulic leaks and weak lift |
| Wheel wobbles or is loose on the shaft | Check the hub nut, cotter pin and Woodruff key |
This is the manual procedure for build-up that compressed air won't clear.[1]
The cutting head does the lifting, and blocks hold the machine while the wheel is off.
Block the machine up as for a wheel change, and have a container ready for oil.
Never check for leaks with your hand. Use cardboard, because pressurized fluid can inject through skin. Fluid spec and change intervals are in Ride-on scraper daily and weekly maintenance.
The front lifts on the cutting head, the same way the rear does.
Protect the wheels and caster whenever the machine is moved.
