Seguir comprandoWhy floor layers' knees take more damage than almost any other trade, and how to choose hard-cap, soft-cap and no-cap knee pads for the surface you're on.
This guide is general information, not a substitute for the regulations or a qualified professional. Follow OSHA's silica standard for construction (29 CFR 1926.1153) and OSHA's asbestos rules for construction, and use an EPA-accredited asbestos professional for testing and abatement. State and local rules may be stricter.
Floor covering is one of the hardest trades on the knees. Good knee pads cushion the joint and spread the load. Pick the cap to suit the floor, so you protect your knees without marking the finish.
The research on floor layers is consistent: more years of kneeling means more knee damage.
Knee pads help, but changing how the work is done helps more. NIOSH ranks protective gear below that kind of change.[5] Using a power stretcher instead of a knee kicker, and stand-up tools where they exist, takes load off the knees. See Power stretcher vs knee kicker.
The cap is what touches the floor, so match it to what you're kneeling on.
| Cap | Best for | What the maker says it does |
|---|---|---|
| Hard plastic | Concrete, demo, tack strip | Wears longest on concrete and guards against sharp objects like tack strip pins (Gundlach 504H)[6] |
| Soft rubber | Sheet vinyl and finished floors | Won't mar or dent sheet vinyl (Gundlach 504SN)[7] |
| No cap | Floors that dent easily | Capless, for sheet vinyl and other floors that could dent (Gundlach 507)[8] |
| Gel, non-marring cap | Moving between hard and soft surfaces | Non-marring cap that won't scratch the floor (QEP ProMAX Gel)[9] |
Comfort over a full day comes down to the insert and how the pad stays in place.
A pad only protects if it stays centered on the kneecap.
Most knee pad problems come from using one pair for everything.
These cover hard, soft and no-cap styles.
