Walk-behind scrapers win on access and weight. Ride-ons win on production and operator fatigue once the job is big enough to keep them moving. Most removal contractors end up owning both.
Use a walk-behind for residential rooms, upper floors of wood-framed buildings, and anywhere you're fighting doorways, stairs or small elevators. Use a ride-on for open commercial floors on concrete, tile demo, and any job where you'd otherwise run a walk-behind all day. Measure the open floor and the path in before you pick the machine.[1][2]
The differences between the two come down to size, weight, access and production.
| Walk-behind | Ride-on | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Residential, light commercial, upper floors, tight rooms | Large open floors, commercial, tile and heavy adhesive |
| Substrate | Concrete or wood (run bevel down and lighter on wood) | Mostly concrete slabs |
| Access | Fits standard doors and most elevators; hand-carry up stairs in pieces | Needs a ramp, dock or lift gate; check door, elevator and floor load |
| Weight | Light enough for wood-framed floors | Around a ton or more; the National 5700 is 2,059 lb without weights[3] |
| Power | Corded electric, some battery | Battery (indoor, 110V charging) or propane (outdoor or large open spaces) |
| Materials | Carpet, VCT, sheet vinyl, adhesive, small tile jobs | All of those at speed, plus ceramic, wood and rubber |
Five things decide which machine fits the job.
Heavy self-propelled walk-behinds, like the National 5280 and 6280-HD Gladiator, carry more weight and drive themselves. They handle tile and tough adhesive without a ride-on's access problems. The 6280-HD is the usual pick for larger ceramic jobs and the 550 for bathrooms and kitchens.[4]
Most bad machine choices come from focusing on speed and forgetting about access and transport.
