Tile Breaker vs Ride-On Scraper for Tile Demo

How a wheeled tile breaker and a ride-on scraper each take up tile and mortar, and which fits the room, the mortar bed and the access.

Updated · 2 min read

A tile breaker and a ride-on scraper attack tile differently. A breaker uses a hammer and chisel on a wheeled frame to crack tile and mortar in front of it. A ride-on uses weight and a carbide shank to shear tile off the slab. Which one fits depends on the room size, what the tile is set in, and how you get the machine in.

How each one works

How each one breaks tile explains where it works best.

  • Tile breaker (Eddy TB3): an electric breaker on a wheeled frame with an auto-adjusting chisel angle and a folding handle. It takes SDS Max chisels and is built for removing ceramic and porcelain tile, mortar and thinset.[1]
  • Ride-on scraper: runs a carbide-tipped shank nearly flat to the floor. The tip breaks the tile and cuts through the mortar under it.[2]

Side-by-side

Here's how they compare for tile demo.

Tile breaker Ride-on scraper
Best for Kitchens, baths, corridors, thick mortar in smaller areas Large open floors on concrete
Access Rolls through standard doors; handle folds for transport Needs a dock or lift gate; check doors, elevators and floor load
Power Corded electric Battery or propane
Tooling SDS-Max chisels Carbide shanks, then a heavy-duty blade for cleanup
Substrate Concrete Mostly concrete slabs

Production

Ride-ons are the fastest option when they can run, though tile comes up slower than soft goods. We haven't found published manufacturer removal rates for either machine type, so plan jobs on your own experience.

How to choose

Four things decide it on each job.

  • Size: a bathroom or kitchen is breaker or walk-behind work. An open commercial floor is ride-on work.
  • Access: if a ride-on can't get in safely, the decision is made. See Loading and transporting floor machines.
  • Mortar: thick mud beds need a heavy machine or a breaker. Thinset over a flat slab shears off well with a ride-on.
  • Floor structure: check the floor load rating before bringing a ride-on onto an upper floor.

Technique notes

Either way, the demo goes faster in strips.

  • With a scraper, ditch the floor: run long lines from one side of the room to the other.[3]
  • Come back with a wider shank or heavy-duty blade to clean up.
  • Control silica dust the whole way. See Silica dust and respiratory safety.
