Carpet Binding vs Serging

Tape binding and serging both finish a carpet edge. How they differ in look, cost and fit, and what equipment each takes.

Updated · 1 min read

Both turn a cut piece of carpet into a finished rug or runner. Binding sews a fabric tape over the edge. Serging wraps the edge in yarn. Pick by look, budget and the carpet you're working with.

Side-by-side

The two finishes differ mainly in look, cost and what they're made of.

Binding[1] Serging[1]
What it is Fabric tape (cotton, polyester or synthetic) folded over the edge and stitched Yarn wrapped continuously around the edge in an overlocked stitch
Look Clean, tailored border, typically 1/4" to 3/8" Hand-finished look, traditionally about 3/8"; blends with the pile
Cost More economical Premium
Best for Remnants, runners, commercial mats, budget projects High-end rugs, wool, custom shapes where the edge should disappear
Machine Carpet binder (single or double pull) Serger

Both are permanently attached and extend the life of the edge.[1]

How to choose

A few questions settle most jobs.

  • Want the edge to disappear into the rug? Serge it, color-matched to the pile.
  • Want a contrasting border or the lowest cost? Bind it.
  • Very thick or high pile? Check the machine's capacity first; some edges need a wider tape or a different machine.
  • Loose or unstable backing? Some backings unravel even after finishing. Seal the edge and test a scrap before committing.

Equipment

Each finish takes its own machine.

  • Binders: single pull machines feed the carpet with one puller; double pull machines grip above and below for thicker carpet and straighter tracking.
  • Sergers: wrap yarn around the edge and often include an option to bind as well.
  • Staple-on edging: an edge binding stapler attaches tape without a sewing machine for quick jobs.
  • Setup and needles: Binding machine setup. Problems: Skipped stitches and timing.
