This guide is general information, not a substitute for the regulations or a qualified professional. Follow OSHA's silica standard for construction (29 CFR 1926.1153) and OSHA's asbestos rules for construction, and use an EPA-accredited asbestos professional for testing and abatement. State and local rules may be stricter.
A dust collector only protects the crew if it moves enough air at the tool. Size it to the grinder, keep the filter clean, and keep the hose short. OSHA's Table 1 spells out the minimums.[1]
This is a summary of the OSHA silica standard as it applies to grinders. Read the full Table 1 entry for your tool. See Silica dust and respiratory safety.
Table 1 sets the minimum collector performance for each type of grinder.[1][2]
| Tool | Collector requirement |
|---|---|
| Walk-behind floor grinders and milling machines | Airflow at or above the grinder manufacturer's recommendation; filter 99% or more efficient; a filter-cleaning mechanism |
| Handheld grinders (not mortar removal) | Shroud plus 25 cfm or more per inch of wheel diameter; filter 99% or more efficient |
For a 7" hand grinder, that works out to 175 cfm or more.[1] For walk-behinds, the number comes from the grinder's manual, not the vacuum's brochure.
Match real-world airflow, not the brochure number, to what the grinder needs.
The filter is what actually keeps silica out of the air, so it needs attention.
How the collector is hooked up matters as much as its rating.
Most dust control problems come from undersized equipment or careless handling.
These are the collectors, pre-separators and shrouds we carry.
